Is an Optometrist a doctor:
An Optometrist is an eye doctor who has earned the Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree.
Optometrists examine eyes for both vision and health problems, and correct refractive
errors by prescribing eyeglasses and contact lenses. Some Optometrists also provide
low vision care and vision therapy.
Difference between Optometrist and ophthalmologist:
An Optometrist has a degree of doctor of optometry. Drugs to treat certain
eye disorders, such as pink eye, allergies, and glaucoma can be prescribed by
both ophthalmologists and Optometrists. One main difference between an ophthalmologist
and Optometrist is that an ophthalmologist is trained to perform eye surgery.
What is the role of an Optometrist:
Optometrists typically do the following: Perform vision tests and analyze results.
Diagnose sight problems, such as nearsightedness or farsightedness, and eye diseases,
such as glaucoma. Prescribe eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other visual aids,
and if state law permits, medications.
Do Optometrists dilate eyes:
A thorough, dilated exam allows your ophthalmologist to do a complete
exam of the retina, and that is important to do throughout your life, as several
eye diseases and conditions are detected at their earliest stages during a thorough
eye exam: Retinal detachment.
Do I need an ophthalmologist or Optometrist:
Visit an Optometrist or ophthalmologist if you need vision therapy for eye
coordination issues. An Optometrist can help prepare you for eye surgery,
but you'll need an ophthalmologist to perform the operation. Optometrists
and ophthalmologists can prescribe you generic medication.
Why do Optometrists dilate your eyes:
Pupil dilation is performed to purposefully increase the size of the pupils
during an eye exam so that the eye doctor can fully examine the health of the
optic nerve and retina. The exam is critical to preventing and treating eye
conditions that could potentially lead to vision loss.
Can an Optometrist diagnose cataracts:
Eye cataracts can be diagnosed by an Optometrist or an ophthalmologist
by performing a series of tests, usually included in a comprehensive eye
examination. The following tests help doctors diagnose eye cataracts and
determine their severity.
How do Optometrists determine prescription:
Refraction. This is the test that your eye doctor uses to determine your exact
eyeglass prescription. During a refraction, the doctor puts the instrument called
a phoropter in front of your eyes and shows you a series of lens choices. He or she
will then ask you which of the two lenses in each choice looks clearer.
Wishing you all the best,
